The challenge:

The Schippersbeurs was built in the 19th century. For years, it served as an arrival point for international skippers, who then traded their goods in the adjacent Handelsbeurs. The challenge was to ensure the large trading space of the Schippersbeurs did not look cold and stark. The walls had to be painted white, but due to the skylight and the height of the space, a cold appearance is a realistic risk. The colour was of the essence. The project required linseed oil paint, so we decided to use Maril Linseed Oil Wall Paint. A new fishbone floor was placed, too. This floor was not allowed to look to new and had to be suitable for daily use (wine stains, stiletto heels, food, daily cleaning) in short: for intensive use. Everything had to match: colour, smell, feeling and taste.

The Solution

The Schippersbeurs has always been a place where people and products met. In a similar way, our paint products and the architects came together on site to see which colours and products would suit this space. We made multiple sample areas on the wall to find the right colour. The system was important as well. After all, the walls were partially touched up and partially in original condition. Does primer even work in these situations? Is the substrate absorbent or does it not accept anything? These were all questions that were answered through experience. The linseed oil paint is vapour permeable and antistatic, which is very convenient in large spaces like the Schippersbeurs. The paint looks natural, and does not have a plastic-like appearance at all. And that is exactly what the client was looking for: a sense of feeling.

The Result

The Schippersbeurs has always been a place of enterprise, discovery and taste. That is what Fiera stands for today: tasteful meetings in a lovely environment. Reserve a table at Restaurant Fiera and discover a wonderful slice of Antwerp history.
