A hundred years ago, flax was cultivated throughout the Netherlands. It was used to produce linen (fibre flax) and linseed oil. Nowadays, it's somewhat of a forgotten crop, and hardly appears in our fields anymore. We wondered why this was, so we started experimenting with cultivating our own flax. Well, of course, we don't actually do this ourselves. RvR Loonbedrijf from Hoofddorp sows and harvests the crops for us. We then take the harvest to the Zaanse Schans, where professional millers press linseed oil from the linseed.

While the oil mills used to have to buy peanuts to keep this piece of world heritage running, they now have a commercial assignment from a Dutch Paint Factory.

In IJmuiden, we then produce our TOPLIN and ROYL products with this Dutch Linseed Oil. We do so simply because we believe that this plant-based oil still offers the best binding agent out there. As opposed to alkyd, linseed oil remains tough and elastic, and is still regularly found in centuries-old coats of paint.
